Ranked-Choice Voting: A Way Forward for Elections for Michiganders

Help paint the mosaic masterpiece that represents all Michiganders, where every vote counts and every voice matters. Join ‘Rank MI Vote‘ and your fellow Michiganders in solidifying a nonpartisan, transformative initiative toward a more equitable, inclusive, and genuinely representative electoral system here in the state. This initiative has grown substantial traction once again nationwide, beginning in the 90s. Here in Michigan, it would be the single winner of the Ranked Choice Voting model, also known as Instant Runoff Voting. This would allow voters to rank candidates in order of preference and would be applied to most federal elections (e.g., U.S. Senate, House), statewide elections (e.g., Governor, Attorney General), and local elections, where applicable.

To get this further off the ground, Rank MI Vote is circulating petitions, and collecting signatures for a ballot initiative, aiming to get ranked choice voting on the 2026 November ballot. According to MichiganAdvance.com, Pat Zabawa, the executive director of Rank MI Vote, disclosed that we’ll need 446,197 valid signatures to qualify for the placement of this initiative on the ballot. Together, WE THE PEOPLE have the power to redirect the trajectory of not only our state’s democracy but nationally, too. If you are interested in getting involved, please refer to the RankMIVote Volunteer section to volunteer at a local event, canvass to collect signatures, or find another way to get involved. For more information on this initiative, you can check out the Petition section on the RankMIVote website, Ballotpedia, or the Independent Voter News website.
